Operating result

The result of the trading itself, before financial income and charges.

The operating result is net turnover and other operating income, less raw materials and external expenses, staff costs, value adjustments and other operating charges. Interest and exchange effects are left out.

It is the most direct read on whether the business itself works. A company can post a positive result on the sale of an asset while its trading loses money: the operating result keeps the two apart.

The Luxembourg profit and loss account has no operating-result subtotal — it runs from turnover to the result for the year without stopping there. Overit therefore sums it from the items above it, and only where turnover was published.
