Provisions
Likely, clearly identified charges whose amount or timing is still uncertain.
A provision covers an obligation the company considers likely without knowing exactly how much or when: a live dispute, a guarantee given, a restructuring under way, pension commitments, tax not yet assessed.
It is neither a creditor nor a reserve, and the distinction matters. A creditor is certain in amount and timing. A reserve is part of capital and reserves: it is profit kept back. A provision sits between the two — an expected charge, recognised before it is paid.
The Luxembourg balance sheet separates provisions for pensions and similar obligations, provisions for taxation, and other provisions. The abridged model publishes only the total.
